Genre Conventions Research - Mystery

One genre I thought of was a mystery

Common camera angles used in a mystery video would be close ups to show the facial expression of the actors, extreme close ups to emphasize the thing shown like a prop, over the shoulder shot to give a dark feeling and POV shot may be used to give another perspective of what the actor is seeing.

Common Mis en scene found in a mystery blog are costumes that fit into a mystery are dark colored clothes. The lighting is usually dark to create a mysterious sense and the acting is a fear or scared feeling. Makeup, props and the setting depends on the video.

Common editing used in this genre are jump-cuts,  reverse shots, and fade outs. Common sound used is dialogue, diegetic and non diegetic sound. An example of a mystery film I like is The Black Swan. Some elements of the mystery genre that don’t appeal is an event not being explained to create suspense and questions.

My Pitch

Hey Bloggers, welcome to my Pitch blog!

Pitch A: A girl wakes up in the middle of the night to strange requests to look up at the moon that grow more and more concerning by the minute.

Pitch B: A girl starts her average day until she slowly realizes everyone has somehow vanished.

Discuss Pitch A: I would like to make this film because I am interested in this concept the most. It is convenient considering there are not multiple people required to make this film, and the destination for filming can simply be my own home.

Discuss Pitch B: This pitch is definitely my second choice. It seems like a very interesting idea however I am just simply not connected to it. Although it is convenient just like pitch A, I want to use a prompt that I will be fully interested in.

My final Decision: Since I am more invested with my first pitch, I have decided to go with Pitch A: A girl who is receiving strange requests to look at the moon.

Group Blog -

Hey bloggers! Welcome back to Ary's world. In this blog, I am going to be discussing my group for our next project. I am excited to be making a commercial, but every project needs a crew. I have decided to pick a group of three to aid me in this project. A reason I believe I will do well in this group is my creativity. I also have prior knowledge about cameras due to my experience in musical theatre. I have previously worked in front of and behind a camera which I think will aid my group. I will be able to help film our video with a variety of shots and angles. I have picked my friend Katherine. Katherine is an excellent artist which will be great for the commercial for our storyboard. Another person in my group that I have picked is my friend Camila. Camila is very musically talented which I believe suits this project considering it is a MUSIC video. Camila is great with recognizing beats and melodies that will go perfectly with our commercial. Our group has all decided we want a song that pairs well with our personalities and entertaining. I believe Camila will be able to help us choose a song that illustrates what we want our video to be like. The next person I have chosen in my group is Lyne. Lyne is very motivated and smart. Lyne is also talented with editing. I believe she will be able to help us stay on track and plan when to film our video and where. Lyne will also be able to help with editing our shots together. Overall, my group members are all equally talented and I cannot wait for our commercial.

Introducing Myself -

Hey, my name is Aryanna Morrobel. I was born in October of 2007, and I am 15 years old. I was born in the United States and have moved around a few times. Some things that make me who I am are the things I like. My favorite time of day is the sunset, specifically at the beach. I've always loved the beach, the smell of the ocean and laying in the sand. I love taking pictures. Whether it's of scenery, my friends or something I just wanted to save. I love having the memories to always look back on. I spend forever in my photos. I find it tiring when I settle into a constant routine. I dislike when things repeat yet I find it hard to accept great change. One important thing about me is family. I have my mother, father, grandmother and many cousins in my life. Some of my greatest joys in life are spending time with my family. Another thing that brings me joy is my academics. I put genuine effort into my schoolwork and activities that will further my academic success. I love my Puerto Rican heritage. I often spent summers with my hispanic family back on the island. I am still figuring things about myself. I find comfort in reflecting on the past and it motivates me to continue my future.

CCR Blog - Goodbye to the Music Video!

  1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?

After looking at the conventions and comparing with our project, I believe we followed what is usually portrayed by our genre that we selected for our music video. The genre of our song, Infrunami by Steve Lacy, is considered Alternative. The alternative genre is sometimes referred to as “Indie”. Following the usual indie aesthetic of films, I believe our video captures the elements and essence of other videos within the same genre of ours. Most indie videos typically try to capture a calm, easy going and enjoyable setting. Our music video directly follows this aesthetic. There are typically more filters applied during the editing stage that our video did not exactly add, however the overall mood that comes from the video was replicated within our music video. I do not believe our video necessarily deals with any social groups or issues. Our video was created with the intent of creating a fun environment and a relaxed feeling. There was no social issue addressed within the video, as my group felt that the song did not represent any problems that needed to be shown within our music video. For the most part, we just wanted to create a music video that displayed happiness within a group of friends. There is diversity within our group, but that was not purposeful or expanded on with our music video project or an important aspect of the video whatsoever.

  1. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

What makes our video fun and enjoyable is the feeling we tried to emulate. Other videos of the same genre typically have an easy going and laid back mood to their video, which is something we purposefully replicated with our music video. Our video gives the audience a happy feeling and brings joy to viewers. The storyline consists of a group of friends who are slowly becoming closer as they spend more time with each other on a picnic. The video is filled with fun moments that make it engaging and interesting for viewers to see. We even made sure to add a food fight to our music video to bring attention to the project and show something unexpected that will peak the interest of viewers. Although my other group members may have chose another option, I personally would have released this music video to TikTok. Considering the short amount of time allowed for this project, this is the perfect video for the platform. Steve Lacy, which is the artist who created the song we chose for our video, is also a popular singer on the TikTok app, which may peak the interest of many viewers. Tiktok is a fast paced app, and I believe our storyline moves fast enough to keep the attention of many viewers. It is also much easier for our project to reach multiple audiences, considering Tiktok is one of the most popular social media apps currently, as well as how easy it is to land on someone’s algorithm, and the quick access to buttons that allow you to share the video within seconds. I believe our video would be very popular on that app.

  1. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

My production skills were not advanced whatsoever at the start of this project, to be completely honest. I am very inexperienced when it comes to technical production such as videotaping and editing. Before this project, I had never recorded or worked on a project that included filming, editing and more.. I've learned a lot of essential production skills from this project, such as editing, utilizing technology, developing production plans, and taking quality shots. I have learned and memorized a large variety of new vocabulary media terms like different sorts of angles, multiple different kind of shots, and filming from distances. In the present day, it's seen that most media is fueled by technology, therefore learning these key concepts benefits me. Deciding on the plan for the video and what storyline we wanted to follow was stressful. My group members each had different ideas and different plans envisioned for our video. This was solved by each group member explaining their plan and story and then we each chose which we thought was the best and could be executed well. When creating the music video, many of our clips were reconsidered with different angles and shots. For example, the group took long shots and also close up shots to debate and see which one would fit the story line best. We had to heavily consider what kind of shot we wanted for the cake in the face scene, as we only had one try to get it right. Another issue we had was with pacing the clip properly. We had to debate whether or not some clips should be done quickly or stretched out to fit the video better.

By these decisions being made, I knew that this project had influenced me to start planning and making proper plans about the decisions I would make.

  1. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

Many forms of technology were integrated in this proiect.

To film, Camila’s sister’s phone was used to record all the scenes because her camera had the best quality. To edit and blog, our group used our computers and phones because we could access the blogs on both devices easily. The computer wasn't the only thing our group used for editing. We used an app called CapCut to edit our music video together. Like I have stated in previous blogs, CapCut is a free editing app that is easy to use. We had previously used this app before for our commercials on ourselves and our lives. Our group mutually decided this would be the best option for us to edit the music video on, considering we were the most experienced with this. Another option was imovie, however we felt as though this app would not give us the best quality music video. Sometimes, imovie is hard to navigate as well. Our group used cellular devices to film with this project because none of us own any proper filming equipment. a phone was our only option for filming the project, however we were able to make a perfectly good video with it.

Final updates concerning editing..

Hey bloggers! Welcome back to Ary's world. This is it, the final blog about editing our music video. Firstly, I am so happy that I was able to work on this project with people that I enjoy spending time with. Secondly, I am happy this process is finished! As for editing, our editor initially had some problems with creating the music video. Some clips were too long and ended up needing to be cut down. We also ended up missing one of the clips of our video! We also had trouble deciding what part of the song to overlay on our video, as we wanted one specific part to go over one of our scenes. However, the rest of the process was enjoyable. Our editor claims that editing was a lengthy process. She had to change the lighting in many of the clips to match the vibe we wanted for our video. She also had to delete some parts of many of the clips. Nonetheless, we were able to cut down our video under the time limit. We are currently at a minute and fourteen seconds. We chose to have the beginning of the song play for our video. The song is only around 2 minutes long, so the time frame we chose makes sense. Considering the amount of effort we put into the video, I am proud of the music video we have made. I had so much fun with this project. Now it is time to upload the video to youtube. After that, I will embed it in the next blog.
